The Odyssey in Comparison With ââ¬ÅMy Father on His Shieldââ¬Â Essay Example for Free
The Odyssey in Comparison With ââ¬Å"My Father on His Shieldâ⬠Essay Often in literature, writers unintentionally create works that tie very well with one another. Two works that connect well are The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fizgerald, and ââ¬Å"My Father on His Shield,â⬠by Walt McDonald. While McDonaldââ¬â¢s poem underscores the tone of mourning and sorrow by the main character, Homerââ¬â¢s work elucidates the tone of animosity and hurt. As previously stated, the tone of McDonaldââ¬â¢s poem, ââ¬Å"My Father on His Shieldâ⬠is one of mourning and grief. The speaker of the poem is grieving his father who he lost to battle and experiences struggles in coping with it all. McDonaldââ¬â¢s details about the sled mentioned in the poem reflect the closeness that was once there between the speaker and his father, in addition to the level of importance the speakerââ¬â¢s father had in his life. The use of diction by McDonald also emphasizes the speakerââ¬â¢s mourning, often accompanied by nostalgia, by implicating the repetition of the words ââ¬Å"I rememberâ⬠throughout the poem. This constant remembrance expresses the speakerââ¬â¢s difficulty coming to terms with his fatherââ¬â¢s death. In contrast with McDonaldââ¬â¢s poem, Homerââ¬â¢s work, The Odyssey, exhibits a tone filled more with animosity and heartache rather than the previous, more somber and mournful feel. The main character, thus far, is named Telemakhos. The characterââ¬â¢s father has been gone for many years without returning or sending any messages, causing the boy and his mother to wonder whether he has died, or if he is gone because he does not wish to return. By the use of detail, readers are able to find out that as a result of his fatherââ¬â¢s extended absence, a number of suitors have begun to take free reign over their home and all of their property, seeking to marry the possible widow. Homer uses diction in order to indicate the Telemoakhosââ¬â¢ animosity towards his father: Friend, let me put it in the plainest way. My mother says I am his son; I know notsurely.Who has known his own engendering? I wish at least I had some happy man as afather, growing old in his own house ââ¬â unknown death and silence are the fate of him that, sinceyou ask, they call my father. (Homer 8) Telemakhos is saying that although his mother and everyone say Odysseus is his father, he does not feel that way because he lacks any memory of him. He wishes he could have his father in his life, and is bothered by the fact he hasnââ¬â¢t the slightest bit of knowledge in regards to the whereabouts of his father. Telemakhos and the speaker in the poem by McDonald share similar experiences. They both are dealing with the absence of their fathers who both partook in the military. However, the speaker in the poem actually knows for a fact his father has died, which may be why he copes with the lack of a father better than Telemakhos, solely because he does not need to question whether or not his father isnââ¬â¢t in his life due to sheer carelessness. Because Telemakhos hasnââ¬â¢t the faintest idea of his fatherââ¬â¢s whereabouts, he is in search for closure, not only for himself, but for his mother and property being destroyed by the savage suitors. Their circumstances are what control the tone in their dialog, allowing the reader to feel the same things the speakers are feeling.

Case Analysis Ms. Celebrity - 2025 Words
Another analogy can be made in regards to the Allen case to Fallbackââ¬â¢s possible litigation. In the possible Fallback litigation, Ms. Celebrity, a prominent celebrity, brought an action against a business for misappropriating her likeness in an advertisement, just as in the Allen case. The picture or portrait of Ms. Celebrity in this case is a robot, as opposed to a lookalike in the Allen case. In accordance to the Allen case the viewers of the advertisement must think that the person actually appeared in the advertisement. In the Allen case this question was left up to a jury, however, in the Fallback case it can be inferred that no person would believe that the robot in the advertisement was Ms. Celebrity herself. The fact that theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the Fallback litigation, Ms. Celebrity is upset because everyone is teasing her about the advertisement just as in McNulty where the plaintiff tries to bring his claim due to unwanted annoyance and banter. The court deems this cause of action not applicable though, therefore Ms. Celebrityââ¬â¢s claim would not proceed based on the annoyance and teasing she endured as a result of the advertisement. Ms. Celebrity may argue that her claim should survive because, unlike The Naked Cowboy, the persona she plays on television and her is one in the same. This claim can be easily refuted though by a few major points. The first point is that television is most often scripted. Ms. Celebrity, even if she does play herself on a reality television show, more than likely does not portray herself as she normally would all of the time. Another point to be made is that Ms. Celebrity is doing her job when she is on television. The Ms. Celebrity on television is a persona that she plays, and is paid to play. In order to keep her job Ms. Celebrity has to act a certain way to attract and retain viewers. To insinuate that she always acts the same way off camera as she does on camera is not plausible. The element of the statute requiring that the plaintiffââ¬â¢s likeness be used without her consent will not be satisfied in this case. This is because no viewer could mistake the robot used as Ms. Celebrity, Ms. Celebrityââ¬â¢s persona was
