Describe Your Own Leadership Style Essay Example for Free
Describe Your Own draws Style EssayJim Collins and a separate of 22 query associates conducted a five-year look project searching an answer on the question how a company from merely good spate be transformed to non bad(p) one and identified that behind this transformation lies a take 5 attractor. Level 5 lead refers to the highest level in a hierarchy of double-deckers capabilities. A level 5 leader transforms the ecesis into a great institution through a paradoxical combination of personal lowliness plus professional will. Beneath Level 5 leaders, lie four some other layers, each one appropriate in its own right just now none with the power of Level 5. Level 1 leader is a high capable individual who plays an important role in the success of his g overnment activity through his talent, knowledge, skills and good impart habits. A level 2 leader is a add group member who is very good with his team members and ensures that his team meets its assigned objectives an d fulfils the core purpose. A level 3 leader is a competent manager who is skilled at organising people and resources towards the rough-and-ready and high-octane pursuit of predetermined objectives. A level 4 leader is an effective leader. He sets high-level performance standards. He is remarkable at motivating his people and conduct them towards realising his vision of the organisation. (Appendix 1, p. 11 summarises all levels of Collins Leadership Hierarchy) (Collins, J. (2005). Level 5 Leadership The Triumph of Humility and angered Resolve, Harvard Business Review, Vol. 83. No. 7, p. 136-146) The purpose of this subsidisation is to conduct an evaluation of my own style of leadership within the organisation in which I work by using the above hierarchy as a frame of reference. In order to produce a thorough assessment on both my style and the subprogramfulness of Collins model, a clutches of other theories and concepts moldiness be taken into consideration. However, before pro ceeding to the analysis and evaluation, it would be helpful first to know the position I hold as nearly as its responsibilities within the organisation. A Brand Manager, member of the Marketing Department, is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of the Companys marketing activities, among others Launching of new products, market investigate studies, promotional activities/materials, to organize and execute the raining programs for the Sales Force. In order to become an efficient and effective Brand manager, the company is requiring knowledge (good academic background), come and managerial skills including Strategic and analytic capabilities, entrepreneurial spirit, team player, and flexibility and strong skills in confabulation and leadership. The Idea of Leadership It is virtually likely to find a topic more important to business success today than leadership. Leadership is defined as the ability to influence people toward the achievement of goals.Leader ship occurs among people, involves the use of influence and it is used to attain goals. Leaders atomic number 18 expected to persuade or inspire people, produce cooperative efforts and pursue goals. Leadership is different from management, though the two argon easily confused. One may be a leader without cosmos a manager and many managers cannot lead a team of seven- years olds to the ice cream counter according to Gardner (1989). Gardner believes that there be several dimensions for distinguishing leadership from management.Leaders think long-term, look outside as well as inside and influence others regardless the position that they possess. In order to understand the idea of Leadership and which be the characteristics a leader usually has, studies and research have been conducted and several approaches to leadership styles as well as theories are arose. Some of them are going to be related to Collins Level 5 leadership hierarchy as well as to my own style of leadership. (Daft R. L. , Management, ch. 16, Leadership in Organisations , p. 514-515) Level 1 Leader The Leadership Traits ApproachLeadership trait approach is the oldest approach to the study of leadership. From this approach occurs that there are certain qualities in some people that define them as leaders or potential leaders. Traits therefore are the distinguishing personal characteristics such as intelligence, values and appearance. Leaders extend their power and use their abilities to influence events. Effective leaders are usually more intelligent, more dependable, responsible and more active. They usually ask for more information and give out more information. However, the ppropriateness of a trait or a set of traits depends on the leadership situation. The same traits do not apply to every organisation or situation. (Appendix 2, p. 11 summarises the physical, social and personal leadership characteristics) On the contrary, Collins Hierarchy is consisted of several characteristics/ capabi lities that most can be found also in the leadership trait approach such as knowledge, achievement to drive and working in effect with others in a group setting. However, two characteristics that are of great importance are not included in it.There are the most important ones and are a necessary requirement for transforming an organisation from good to great, humility and professional will. (Diploma in Management, Module word of honor 1, section 6, Teams in Management, p. 6. 16) However, in order to understand in what extent these two concepts can be correlated, we can use ourselves as an example. For instance, my position requires being a exceedingly capable individual (Collins Hierarchy Level 1). How can I accomplish this requirement? By demonstrating many of the personal traits such as intelligence, knowledge, judgement and cognitive ability. For instance, the products that I handle have intense competition. Good knowledge of the market as well as intelligent moves make them to differentiate from competition. The creation of a guideline for treatment at home as well as the delivery of the products at home gave a good to them. As a result, Doctors preferred to prescribe these products for long term use and hade great impact on the companys name and reliability. When we speak of leadership, each we refer to the qualities/ competencies of an individual or we can refer to a portion of organisation. The trait theory of leadership- the traditional or popular management view of leadership- focuses on the concept that leadership is a quality or set of qualities particular to an individual. On the contrary, the group dynamics theory sees leadership as a function of organisation. Level 2 Leader Task versus people perspective styles Task versus people perspective styles of leadership do not take into consideration the organisation as a whole. They focus on teams. Every group of people has a task to accomplish. However, since groups are composed of people, several n eeds arise from them. tally to the group dynamics theory of leadership, the person who adequately fulfils the needs that the group perceive to be the most important could be considered as an effective leader. A working team need to fulfil two functions. First, its formal tasks must be fulfilled. In order this to be accomplished a set of competencies must be evolved. Technical knowledge, innovation and sense of achievement are related with the instrumental need to perform the tasks.Second, needs for affiliation, interaction and mutual support are usually observed within a team. Such needs are called expressive needs. The person who becomes leader must facilitate the satisfaction of some of the teams needs. This leader emerges to the group because he is the best able to help the group survive and succeed. ) (Master in Business Administration, Module book 3, section 1 The Theory of Leadership, p. 1. 7-1-11) agree to Collins leadership hierarchy, the leader that is described in the gr oup dynamics approach could be characterised as a level 2 leader.A contributing team member who is very good with his team members and ensures that his team meets its assigned objectives and fulfils the core purpose. Both group dynamics approach and Collins hierarchy are useful in helping us to see how leaders may relate to team members and to situations. (Collins, J. , (2005). Level 5 Leadership The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve, Harvard Business Review, Vol. 83. No. 7, p. 136-146) As a Brand Manager, one of my responsibilities to support our sales team by providing them with moderate amounts of detail and focus on why it is important for the team members to complete our objectives. However, I believe that co-owning the objective/action plan with team members and asking team members ideas as well as pass my own ideas is more efficient and can lead us easier to our goals. Besides, It is better to have, for instance, five people to think rather than one. Therefore, I strongl y believe that teamwork can lead to better results. Level 3 Leader The Contingency Theory According to contingency models, leadership depends as some(prenominal) on the situation of the group as on the leader himself or herself. Thus, we have a choice either the leader can fit to the situation or change effectively the situation to fit the leader. As we can understand, leadership is different for first-level supervisors than for chief executives and the kind of leadership needed for skilled and highly motivated followers may not work for followers who are alienated and untrained. According to Fiedler, contingency model divides the leadership situation into three variables. In order to determine the most effective leadership style, we must consider the inter-relationship of the three contingencies leader member relations, task- structure and position power. 1.Leader member relations, where mutual trust, respect and open communication exist and can be consider as advantageous. Thi s means that tasks are clear and structured and members are aware of the power the leader holds. On the other hand, where there is little or no trust, respect of communication, indeed the relationship can be characterised as disadvantageous (control over the situation is needed and a focus on a task will not detract from the leaders/ team relationship because this is not essential to start with.2.Task- structure, when work is highly structured and easy to know when somebody has not complied with an instruction and it is easy to impose sanctions. However, when work is unstructured, leaders cannot enforce compliance with external controls and therefore, the leader has much less power than when work is highly structured. 3. Position power, is the extent to which a leader has formal authority over the followers. When position power is high then the leader has the power to plan and direct the work of followers, evaluate it and accordingly reward or punish it.On the other hand, when posi tion power is low, the leader has little authority over followers. (Appendix 3, p. 11 presents Fiedlers examination on how Leader Style fits the situation) Finally, according to Fiedler, task-oriented leaders tend to be more effective in situations that are either highly advantageous or highly disadvantageous to them and that relationship-oriented leaders tend to be more effective in situations that are moderately advantageous to them. (Bolman,L. G. , Terrence,D. E. , Reframing Organisations, Ch. , Reframing Leadership, p. 342-344) According to Collin, a level 3 leader is a competent manager who is skilled at organising people and resources towards the effective and efficient pursuit of predetermined objectives. However, as it is showed above, an efficient leader must differ from situation to situation or from team to team, according to its special characteristics. Analysing a level 3 leader in correlation with Contingency theory, we understand that a level 3 leader should consider both leader member relations and tasks.Predetermined objectives cannot be achieved, if mutual trust, respect and open communication do not exist in a team and if tasks are not highly structured and followers do not know precisely their responsibilities. However, we must never ignore the extent to which a leader has formal authority over the followers. (Collins, J. , (2005). Level 5 Leadership The Triumph of Humility and Fierce Resolve, Harvard Business Review, Vol. 83. No. 7, p. 136-146) For instance, according to my position, my everyday contact is with the sales team.According to my opinion, it is clear that trust, respect as well as open communication and mutual understanding exist within our team. One of the responsibilities of my position is to organise in some extent, their work by indicating them what is our goal and how we can reach it, with what tools and where we want to focus. Another one is to monitor our products sales and ask questions whenever I believe it is necessar y. However, my position power is not as high as to evaluate them and reward or punish them accordingly.

Adidas PEST and SWOT Analysis
Adidas PEST and SWOT AnalysisThe Footwear Industry is a come a pertinacious sedulousness it consists of giant players uniform Nike, Reebok, Puma on one hand and millions of small retailers in the unorganised sector on the other. This industry presents a unnumberable of interesting observations there atomic number 18 passing specialised segments where transaction is the driving force like running tog, basketball shoes, and soccer shoes. provided to some, a richlyer(prenominal)ly fashionized shoe is the priority. Therefore the industry is in a creative phase where performance and fashion hire now been merged to create a new-fashioned hybrid, called lifestyle segment. The disputation in this industry is roughlyly non-price atleast for the established legendary players like Nike and Adidas. They compete for mind sh atomic number 18 of the customer and aspects like marketing campaigns, bulls eye ambassadors, product proliferation and printing, spell success. Brand Stic kiness is high once a customer has experienced a tag and has been satisfied, indicating that price stickiness is less which is overly due to crocked lifestyles, prosperity and rising purchasing precedent of the customer instantly.Nike and Adidas ar the two mammoths of the industry at present. Nike is the world leader with a close follower as Adidas Reebok engage (post Reeboks acquisition by Adidas in 2006).The report attempts to study the internal external environment in which Adidas operates and competes. To give the study a 360 degree perspective, various aspects of the industry like market trends, customer profile, competitive analysis and are c everyplaceed.I. Corporate MissionMission Statements are an insight into a federations intent, it tells various stakeholders the basic lead for the existence of an organisation why does it do what it chooses to do, who does it deal with, what does it aspire to become all these are essential elements of a guilds mission ins truction, Ros billetr, J. R., Bellman, S. (2005). Marketing communications surmise and applications. The Mission Statement of Adidas is as followsAdidas-Salomon strives to be the global leader in the gaudy goods industry with chromosomal mutations brands built on a passion for sports and a sporting lifestyle. We are consumer cogitate. That means we continuously improve the quality, look, feel and image of our products and our organizational structures to match and exceed consumer expectations and to tolerate them with the highest value. We are innovation and design leaders who undertake to help athletes of all skill levels achieve peak performance with every product we bring to the market. The resulting top- filiation growth, together with strict make up control and working capital improvements, will drive over-proportionate earnings growth. (Mission Statement sourced from www.adidas.com)Adidas is a German fraternity by origin and it had profitd Salomon SA in 1998 as a part of its expansion system. It purchased Reebok in the year 2006 to re-strengthen its position and focus on its core businesses of athletic footwear and crop. The company has been known for its continual zest for innovation, a trait mastered by its founder Adolph Dassler. A detailed analysis of the mission statement reveals the future(a) Post Salomon acquisition, Adidas was clear that it wanted to expand establish itself in a gamut of sports and focus beyond athletic shoes and aptly b e known as a sporting goods company. It al bureaus had lifestyle in mind while thinking of performance. Customer centricity was always high and a continuous improvement to provide more than the customers expected was essential to Adidas. The management realises that athletic performance is the ethos of the company and innovation is required to deliver high performance. Their mission statement also negotiation ab disclose the scale and the throw of mountains by mentioning that it is a truly global conglomerate. It realises its responsibility towards employees, shareholders and the society equally. It mentions that Europe, US, Asia and Latin America will be the focus the company will strive to maintain its cost, increase its top line and deliver the best to all stakeholders.Deliberating on the mission statement, it appears to be a well focused and an all encompassing one. After the acquisition of Reebok in 2006, Adidas has reinforced its core strategy which had got diluted post Sa lomon take over as the product line got too diversified to gel with each other or to alter smooth management of the business overall. If one were to write a revamped Mission statement for Adidas considering the current competencies, its focus and the industrial environment in mind, the following can be a suggestive and an all compassing attempt Adidas Mission StatementWe will exploit engine room judiciously in our entire product lines of footwear and apparel, both in performance and fitness segment, to extend benefits to all our stakeholders globally either in the form of more comfort, better technique in sports, overture in the materials used, competitive prices, more eco-friendly use of raw materials and maximum growth to enable them to get the best value proposition from us.II. Core CompetenciesThe Core competencies form the basis of edge over the competition. It signals what one company does superbly better than the other, by virtue of which it can reap excellent benefits. Adidas has the following core competencies Living the three core valuesThe vision got established in 1920 when Adolph Dassler started designing the stolon shoe ever. And ever since then to now, three things have not changed and that is the three genuine intentions of the company manufacture each shoe as a chef-doeuvre for the requirement of the sport, avoid the sportsman from injury and make the product long lasting and value for money. Adidas has sworn by these three values and even over decades, these core values have never been disintegrated. Even when athletes talk of performance, they vouch for Adidas. Continuous innovation and mastering the art of perfection, Adidas believes in outdoing itself each time and this is clear visible in the vast product range it offers. Be it athletics, tennis or soccer, Adidas is a name integral to success of sportsmen alike.Strategic Expansions organic integrations attention at Adidas has made the right determinations at the right time. Whe ther it be entering into a merger or divesting, such strategic activities have been well sentiment of and well timed. In 1999, Adidas wanted to expand beyond athletic shoes and apparel and that is when it bought Salomon which had large established inroads into other sports such as skiing, skating and golf. It also had strawman in bicycle production. Thus Adidas became a true sports equipment, shoe and apparel manufacturer but it retained the identity of different brands, a owlish decision as it became easy to disintegrate with Salomon around 2005, when it could no longer handle the vast mutually exclusive set of businesses. In 2006, Adidass decision to acquire Reebok was equally strategic it was a two pronged strategy as firstly Adidas Reebok combined together could compete with Nike, the industry leader in a more vigorous manner. Secondly it gave Adidas a platform to create its presence in the lifestyle segment where it was earlier non-existent. Adidas was always known as a p erformance brand and Reebok as a lifestyle and a fitness brand the coming together of the two is a lethal combination as it presents a complete proposition to all kinds of customer segments. The decision for both the brands to maintain their brand identity is again a well informed decision as it avoids cannibalisation.Technology InnovationThe core competence of Adidas is its continuous zest to innovate. It lives and maintains its performance image very meticulously. At the same time, it has constantly believed in innovating, this was exemplified to the world, when in 2002, Adidas along with the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto launched an exclusive range of sneakers which were sold at a whopping $590.Branding InternetIn the year 2000, Adidas launched its website with e-commerce applications functional. Adidas knows that the footwear and apparel industry is very mature in order to stay abreast against fierce competition it is vital to invest in web marketing and branding. The site en sure enoughs ease of use, speed and easy navigation. It has both brick and mortar own brand outlets and a vast network of retailers, distributors and online stores. The self branded stores enable a cultivate contact with customers and reading their pulse, building face-to-face relationships with them and personifying the brand with the POP merchandise at thee outlets. Internet has enabled Adidas to reduce its cost and increase its reach drastically. E-commerce has provided Adidas far channel benefits over the competition, the customer data retrieved through the net can be researched upon to understand the customer profiles and their buying behaviour. This enables the management to design highly customer centric communication, discounts and offerings. Though Nike has been a close player reaping all these advantages, other major companies like Converse, Puma, K-Swiss are no way near.III. PESTL AnalysisPESTL analysis is an excellent technique to gauge the external environment in which a company operates. These chemical elements are mostly if not always, uncontrollable and an organisation has to find its position within this cloud.politicalAdidas enjoys presence in the entire Europe market, post its acquisition of Reebok in 2006 it has created inroads in the US as well. The company has expansion plans in Asia Latin America. At most of these places, the political domain remains constant as they are largely democratic set ups. This implies that the government will not pose undue restrictions or introduce stern impractical decisions to be followed blindly by the organization.Elections every four or five years, (in UK most Asian countries respectively) also do not impact Adidas much as it does not really get impacted by the ruling party. There are other aspects like stable currency, minimum wages, hygienic working conditions in factories, stipulated working hours per week that are more critical factors for Adidas to adhere to. This is one reason as to why m ost of these epic players are shifting their manufacturing base to Asian countries like India and China while retaining the RD and designing at their home countries.EconomicEconomic conditions have a considerable impact on the sales operations of Adidas. The inflation rate, the purchasing ply of customers, consolidation and buy-outs hugely affect the revenues. World economy suffered one of the biggest recessions in the past two years with the fall of Lehman Brothers and the shaking of the entire financial sector, people lost jobs and unemployment touched a historical high figure. Purchasing power fell drastically as most of the people all over the world, especially in the US and Canada started living on their savings. The economical crisis in Asian countries also mean that labour and manufacturing costs would now rise impacting the net earnings for Adidas. The stability of government and of currency, tax rates, inflation, import and export duties, special economic zones and subsi des all these are critical economic factors that can impact Adidas and other players in the industry.SocialThis comprises of the culture, beliefs, demographics, psychographics, education levels and spending habits and lifestyle of the target audience. A factor that is too significant for any player to ignore especially when it enters into a new market this is the most important factor that can break or make a brand.Culture, social groups, race, religion impact how people live in a society and thus marketers have to pick up the cues moderately as to how to operate in that environment. Adidas has used this knowledge sagely. Its famous slogan Impossible is nothing captures it beautifully as it gels with the youth today globally. The youth today is characteristic of breaking the rules, exploiting their potential and scatty to unfold the undiscovered. It is this spirit which associates the brand with this audience perfectly. The education level and the pace at which the society moves are reflected in advertising today. Reeboks advertising of its range Easy Tone is another example to demonstrate this aspect. Today women are highly conscious of their figure Reeboks advertising where it claims that Reebok shoes and slip-ons will enable the users to have a well toned figure could not have found acceptance a decade back. With the arrival of internet, the way people shop is also changing. Now Adidas and other major companies have started selling through online stores and promote the same by giving heavy discounts. scientificContinuous innovation and the use of engineering is a great imperative in the industry. The breakthrough use of technology signifies some definite improvement more comfort, superior running performance, more support and cushion, better hold on the ground, reduction in manufacturing costs or in customer priceThe master perforated technology of Geox which claims that it enables its shoes to breathe and overcomes the problem of sweaty feet is a remar kable achievement for the brand it not only creates a niche for itself but enables the company to sell its range at a high premium.Nikes 360 air max, Adidas 1 and Crocs colourful shoes for outdoors, are all examples of constant innovation in the industry. well-grounded RegulatoryLegal Regulatory impact the advertising branding significantly. Let us take an example of Nike when it was planning to enter the Spanish market Nike could have faced the biggest challenge of establishing its mark in Spain because of a trademark issue. This was a decade long litigation case where the Supreme Court found out that the Nike name was a registered trademark of a former distributor called Cidesport. Nike could only use its swoosh but not its name on any of the products. This could have been a great set back and would have demeaned the brand equity. However Nike got lucky when in 2009 Supreme Court reversed its ruling post Nikes appeals.Adidas indigence to make sure all their promotions give a true representation of the products being advertised, as to not break the laws of the Trade Descriptions Act. It needs to make sure all of their retailers have sufficient knowledge of Adidas products in order to obey the Trade Descriptions Act, as if Adidas give the retailers sufficient selective information and they give customers incorrect information about the product, then it is the retailer breaking the Trade Descriptions Act rather than the manufacturer, (www.adidas-salomon.com/en/news/archive/2000/2000-07.asp, August 2010)IV. Market AnalysisLet us analyse the athletic footwear market through Porters Five Forces model to gain a holistic view of the market Barriers to Entry eminent to moderateBrand Loyalty is extremely high economies of scale and scope also restrict entry for small players as the industry is dominated by a couple of(prenominal) giant players who reap huge benefits from the volumes and the supply chain integration. Economies of scale include advertising ma rketing costs, RD spent in addition to voluminous production and economies of scope would include benefits like umbrella branding, available to large conglomerates like Nike Puma. However, a new entrant will not find it difficult to find suppliers or raw materials largely of the fact that is a billion dollar industry which is still largely unorganized.Bargaining Power of Buyers Moderate to HighSwitching cost is low for the buyers as options are endless except in the case where brand loyalty is extremely high. Buyers have easy access to the products through online shop as well. Though the big players dominate the industrys rate but they cannot decide these prices ignoring customers. Billions are spent by these players on market research and studying consumer profile and buying patterns which shows that buyers have high bargaining power in the market.Bargaining Power of Suppliers Extremely LowThe raw materials used in this industry are rubber, cotton and foam. The giants like Nike Adidas lay out stringiest norms which a supplier has to comply with in order to mean quality. Switching between suppliers is also very high in the industry. The supplier power is extremely low, most often than not, these suppliers work at norms and prices governed by the big players of the industry.Threats of Substitutes LowThe substitution is quite low as it is not possible for sneakers to be replaced by fashion or high- heeled shoes. Similarly between tennis shoes and running shoes, there cannot be a replacement. challenger among Existing Competitors HighThe rivalry amongst firms is extremely high and mostly being non-price. Each firm lives and dies by the brand identity it creates. There is fierce competition between Nike Adidas. Specialty shoes like Geox, Rockport and Ecko also compete in niche segments.V. Customer AnalysisAdidas has a brand identity of being performance oriented, technically superior and with strong European roots. Therefore to study the customer type, Adid as looks at three broad types of customers Governed by Superior Performance This is typically a customer who looks for premium performance. Be it an athlete, a tennis player, a soccer lover or a college going student who values technological advancement would choose Adidas over other brands.Fitness Health This segment is best captured by Reebok as it promotes fitness and aerobic shoes. These days the campaign is running globally by Reebok for its Easy Tone shoes where the slogan is take the gym with you. Be it running shoes, aerobic shoes or shoes for casual wear, Reebok has captured huge market share. This range is particularly selling like hot cakes both in US and Asia amongst women as they are constantly worried about toning their thighs and hips. Adidas has wisely let Reebok focus in this segment so that there is no cannibalisation in sales.Lifestyle Shoes Apparel Reebok and Adidas have had significant increase in the market share, competing very closely with Nike in the appar el industry. Easy Slippers, T-Shirts, jackets and jumpers enjoy brand loyalty by customers. Adidas does big promotions in this segment. The recent FIFA World transfuse championship saw players wearing Adidas T-Shirts with the legendary three stripes logo.Customers of these big brands generally have a very gullible temperament and thats the reason these big players engage in celebrity marketing in a big way. Celebrities are chosen with great caution and deals worth millions of dollars are done with these sports sport stars. The idea is to have a rub off effect on the brand and establish strong associations. For e.g. Nike and the coming together of Michael Jordan promoted the shoes in the basketball segment successfully. Even after when he retires, Nikes Air Jordan segment collected significant revenues for the brand. Adidas had tied up with David Beckham and was one of the official sponsors for World cup in 2006 later years saw the sale of Adidas mount like never before. Even till d ate Adidas leads the industry in soccer shoe sales.VI. agonistic AnalysisThe footwear and apparel industry is in a mature phase with fierce competition for market and mind share of the customers.Nike is valued at around 14 billion dollars and is the market leader, followed closely by Adidas Reebok combined at around 12 billion dollars (as per the 2006 statistics captured from their websites). Mostly the firms compete on brand image, web site designs, service, advertising celebrity endorsements and innovation. Nike has had a slight edge over its competitors from the time it launched its products as it has considerably invested in RD and high tech designs. But Adidas has narrowed this gap drastically in recent years.Brand image focus is very high in the industry. Example of this can be seen in the case of Nike. Nike chooses to sell its regular range through high end retailers only, it had refused to sell through Sears post the Sears Kmart tie up as it feared brand dilution, it in stead started retailing its low priced Starter range through this channel.Technology focus and specialisation is high. Nike focuses on performance plus style, Adidas as seen as a high end performance shoe and it leads the market in the soccer industry. Reebok is deemed as a fitness and health conscious brand. New Balance talks only performance and is seen as a no-nonsense brand. Crocs has positioned itself as an outdoor wear brand is predominantly used for boating. Puma is seen as a stylised brand both for footwear and apparels, it has never really spoken of high end sports performance and this focus has helped the brand create its space in the lifestyle segment. then it is imperative that each player positions itself well and delights the customer in that segment rather than being all over the place.Below is a diagram of the intact market share of competing firms (post Reebok Adidas integration)-(Chart sourced from www.hoover.com)To conclude, one analyses that it would be pruden t for close rivals to think of innovative ideas to increase the overall market for performance and lifestyle shoes than provided competing on the market share with each other.VII. SWOT AnalysisSWOT analysis refers to the technique of mapping the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for an organisation. (P. Kotler, S. Adam, L. Brown and G. Armstrong 2001) While the first two are internal to a firm, the last two are more from an industry orientation overall.StrengthsAdidas has an image of high performance and a favoured brand for buyers who seek technology over styleThe acquisition of Reebok complements the brand as it allows a larger portfolio of high end performance based shoes (Adidas) and fitness lifestyle range (Reebok)Known for its constant innovation, Adidas and Reebok Easy Tone being the case in pointAssociation with sports championships enable the brand to be positioned as the leader for association football segmentThe intellectual quotient of management is see n as very high, as Adidas has been known to take the right decisions at the time (evident from all the mergers acquisitions which the brand has done)Association with celebrities like David Beckham adds to the Brand value and high TOMA (Top of Mind Awareness) mapr friendly and high brand appearance web site enabling high online presence colossal product portfolio to choose from Shoes for running, tennis, soccer, skiing, golf and related line of apparel, jumpers, watches etc.WeaknessesAdidas has a vast product portfolio but still has a high dependance on soccer shoes as compared to Nike which has several high revenue bearing productsHas become synonymous with market-follower tag and Nike being the market leader, to most customers it becomes a second choice onlyThe Adidas/Reebok acquisition results in cannibalisation of each others sales rather than targeting competitors. This is because there is a lack of well defined differentiation between both the brandsNot seen as innovative as Nike and is alleged to copy Nike in its advertising, promotions and celebrity endorsementsOpportunityHighly brand conscious youth wanting to own a pair of branded shoes onlyIncreasing love for Soccer where Adidas is perceived as the official brand leaderHigh value placed on fitness sports for a healthy lifestyle, resulting in an increase in the overall industryAdvanced technology availableUse of internet, online marketing and e-commerce widening geographical markets and connecting the globe virtuallyThreatsWorld Economy recession which has impacted the purchasing power of consumers drasticallyCompetition from online stores who have presence only through e-commerce and sell shoes at heavy discounts because of their low cost manufacturing strategyChanging consumer preferences and lifestylesReducing popularity of sports because of frantic working livesIncreasing power of suppliers to set terms, e.g. Wal-MartNew competitors entering the marketPrice war between competitorsCheap replica s available in the marketConclusionAdidas has come a long way over the decades and is now positioned second largest most popular player in the athletic footwear industry. Each company in the industry today is trying to reduce its manufacturing costs by shifting the production to Asian markets. Adidas Reebok have strengthened their combined market, post the integration. This is a well suited strategy to compete with Nike and grow by expanding into the emerging markets US Asia. It would be wise if Adidas focuses on its core competencies and engage into aggressive marketing branding. Critical areas for success are summarised as follows Three critical focus areas which Adidas should be focusing on currently are 1. Strong Highly differentiated Brand Positioning for Adidas Reebok Brands A serious attempt must be made to create a positioning for both the brands. What does Adidas stand for as compared to Reebok? The Company must strategise Adidas as a sports performance brand and cre ate a niche for athletic, tennis, golf, soccer, both in sports apparel. It should position Reebok as a fitness brand and let it handle aerobics, running, manner of walking and casual shoes and apparel.2. Focus on increasing the hail market by innovative marketing Adidas should creatively focus on increasing its total customer base, it should look at promoting soccer in clubs and schools and offer scholarships and start interacting with the children at an early age so that they become loyal customers for life. Reebok should tie up with gyms could offer discounts on Reebok shoes and apparel. It can tie up with specialty clinics fighting obesity and over-weight, sponsor health check up camps and give acquired immune deficiency syndrome for other related causes. This will help the brand in two ways one is that it would help create an image of a socially responsible company and secondly reinforce the strategy to capture the ever increasing health conscious customers of today.3. High end use of technology Undoubtedly RD technology will remain the catalyst of this industry. Adidas will only be able to survive if it continuously focuses on improving the quality performance of its shoes. So when Nike says besides do it, Adidas should scream aloud the spirit Impossible is nothing.

External Influences on Child Development
External Influences on Child DevelopmentDivina Hale1 Referring to lecture and the course reader run some(prenominal) how the following factors are interrelated and how they can influence concepts of puerilityreligion or culture schooling deliverance/socioeconomicshealth trade*Be for certain to discuss these factors as they relate to each other, non independentlyA+B) Culture heavily influences precept during childhood. Different cultures use up values that they want to ingrain in future generations. I think this is seen by subjects that are taught in childhood teaching method. For example, in class we discussed how Americans advocate for basic education, except when it comes to higher(prenominal) education in that respects a theme of only going far enough to have the skills to gain a financially secure future. (E. Miller, personal communication, show 13, 2014) In American culture its expected that youll have a good job and be able to support yourself and a potential family. Originally, this apprehension was geared more(prenominal) towards men, which is common in many cultures. Men are historically thought of as being the provider for the family. This sort of cultural gender bias has shaped the education of children in many countries. For example, Lee(2010) stated in the denomination Parental Educational Investments in Japan, that Japanese parents prefer to educate their sons more beca use up they are ultimately the ones who will be the successors of their families while daughters are married out into other families. (p. 1582) Its non to say that daughters dont dupe any education, but when resources for education are scarce, sons will be the ones to receive education instead of daughters because it gives greater benefits to the parents in the long run. Often this is because the family is short on money or they find that giving their daughter higher education is a waste, so they choose to educate their sons, who will inevitably take care of them w hen they get old, instead of educating their daughters who will use those skills to provide for a contrastive family. (E. Miller, personal communication, March 13, 2014)C+D) The state of a countrys economy plays a huge role on the availability of healthcare for its population. In North America, for example, it is relatively easy to get some kind of care for withal if people dont have money or healthcare. This is because the economies in that location are able to support programs that advocate for nationwide medical care. Then there are those economies that arent healthy enough to support such(prenominal) programs. For children this can lead to early death or health problems that could have easily been stayed with graceful care. The Factors in health initiative Success Learning from Nepals newborn survival initiative obligate by Smith and Neupane(2011), says that many of the neonatal deaths that conk in Nepal could easily be prevented if the mothers had access to care. (p. 570 ) For people in these countries, even the most simple of illnesses can be deadly. Something so simple like diarrhea can be deadly when in places like the United States, medication to stop it can be found in almost any store. This shows how not having enough resources in an economy can affect the population and prevent it from flourishing. During one of the lectures we well-read that only twenty percent of healthcare posts offer cardinal hour service. (E. Miller, personal communication, February 18, 2014) Those that have the money for the care they need are limited to when they can receive treatment making it more more sober to check an ailment outside of the hours of operation. Also some of these clinics may take many days to reach if people do not have fit transportation allowing their health problems to become that much more severe and in a childs case they may not make it to the clinic. These clinics in any case do not offer care aimed solely for children. The Nepalese go vernment has only established a healthcare system for children in Katmandu.EducationFrom a global perspective, refer to lecture and at least two of the three articles in the reader (Hannum et al., 2009 Lee, 2010 and Lohani et al, 2010) to describe some of the specific challenges associated with educational equality or lack thereof.Referring to lecture and the reader, discuss the unique factors of Nepal in terms of how they influence Nepalese childrens current access to education.A) Two of the most prominent factors that prevent equality of education are gender and financial status. In the United States gender is usually not a factor in education equality, but financial status is. Recently in class we discussed the importance of education in our families and in the United States. We discussed how families with greater wealth are able to confide their children to private schools or public schools in better neighborhoods because they have the money to do so. (E. Miller, personal commu nication, March 13, 2014) Those who are not able to afford such schools are likely to send their children to the nearest school to them regardless of quality. Its as well as common for the parents in that family to have received a poor education and so they may not value it as much as they should. This can lead to children not valuing education either and they could lack the drive to do their best in school or decide to drop out. In places such as Japan and China, gender and financial status play a role in education inequality. The article Parental Educational Investments in Japan says that when resources are low, parents are forced to choose which of their children will receive higher education. The level of education a child receives in Japan is largely dependent on their parents because of little public assistance. Women are also limited by little opportunities to advance and cultural incentives to stay home and care for the family. (Lee, 2010, p. 1582) These problems stifle a w omans ability to get a better education. harmonize to Hannum, Kong, and Zhangs(2009) article Family sources of educational gender inequality in rural China A critical assessment, in China gender differences in education are concent pastured in rural areas because children are competing with their siblings for too little resources for education. (p. 475) Educating girls is also considered a waste because their future incomes do not come spikelet to their families.B) In Nepal there is a struggle to provide better educations for children. Quality of Nepalese schools depends on the area and the amount of funding the school receives from the government. fit in to the article Universal primary education in Nepal Fullling the right to education by Lohani, Balak Singh, and Lohan(2010), eighty six percent of students attend alliance schools. Two of the three types of community schools receive little or no aid at all. (p. 356) This leaves financially strained areas around those schools to fund the materials needed for each student. In class we learned that many of the schools are poor in quality and many students of different strike outs must be taught together. (E. Miller, personal communication, March 13, 2014) This lowers the quality of education that students receive. Students are also encouraged by parents to work instead of attending school. Only seven out of ten Nepalese children make it from first grade to fifth grade and over fifty percent drop out before lower secondary school. Of those who drop out most are girls. Some of the high dropout rate for female persons is caused by the girls going through puberty. In some areas of Nepal, menstruating females are temporarily exiled and are unable to go anywhere until the end of their cycle. (E. Miller, personal communication, March 13, 2014) This causes female students to fall behind in their studies every month which makes it secure to continue on in school. There are also few female teachers and there are no s eparate bathrooms for females which can be influence them to dropout. Financial status plays a role in retention too and causes some students to be unable to attend school due to the costs. Many of those who attend are also undernourished and are distracted by hunger during the day, making it hard to retain information. They are often punished by teachers because of their lack of concentration. (E. Miller, personal communication, March 13, 2014)Children in ancientnessReferring to lecture and at least one of the articles in the reader on childhood during antiquityanalyze how families and children were conceptualized during that time and discuss how we know this today.describe what factors determined how much or how little children were valued.*Be indisputable to differentiate between male and female children as well as ancient capital of Italy or Greek city-statesA) According to the Children in Antiquity article by Valerie French(1991), families in antiquity consisted of the normal mother, father, and children plus midwives, tutors, slaves, nurses and many other adults. (p. 13) This shows that child rearing was important in antiquity and was viewed as being a job that extended outside of immediate family. Wealthier families also seemed to control the amount of children they had through family planning in entrap to restrict the number of heirs to their fortunes. Poorer families also had controlled sizes through limited resources and poor health. Families tended to have two or three children. Occasionally the restrictions on the number of children became a problem, when there were fears that two or three children were not enough to maintain the population. The Romans were much more anguished about not being able to have enough heirs to keep up the aristocracy and not having enough selliers for their legions. For Romans and Greeks, mothers were often the more lenient between the parents while the fathers were harsher. Romans also had family welfare plans for th ose in poverty to promote health and family growth. Information about the family and childhood in antiquity are not hard to find. According to our lecture, when historians analyze the information they find they must try to do so in the mind-set of the author by making assumptions about their experiences and beliefs about children. (E. Miller, personal communication, February 4, 2014) This allows them to get the most out of the poems, plays, essays and biographies they find.B) For Rome children didnt seem to have a clump of value. According to Veynes(2003) From Mothers Womb to Last Will and Testament, the head of the family decided whether or not any children born into their household would be raised, disposed or killed at birth. Abandoned children could be taken by anyone who wanted them and all of these practices were common. (p. 12) This seemed to be a common practice for Greece as well. It seems that in both Greece and Rome, male children had more importance than female. Males were thought to be the ones who would take over the family and in Romes case power the legions. According to Children in Antiquity, in Greece female children barely had an adolescent ramification because they were married off so soon after hitting puberty. (French, 1991, p. 17) Their education was also very different from that of male children. Usually, after marriage it was up to the husband to complete his wifes education. Education was thought to be important by Greeks and Romans in order to ensure a good future. According to one of our lectures, Greeks tended to treat females like slaves and they were not permitted to engage in anything related to politics. (E. Miller, personal communication, February 4, 2014) From the articles cited above and class lectures, it seems that Romans and Greeks didnt value their children as much when they were babies, potentially because of the high rate of neonatal death, but seemed to derive a lot of pleasure from their childhoods. It seems that children only really became of use when they were able to start their own families and take on higher roles in society. Even their education seems to be toward making them useful for the community instead of for the packaging of their minds. Value of children for Greeks and Romans seems to have been really situational. If a child was born and was displeasing to the head of household they were simply cast away or even sold into slavery. Female children seemed to be thought of as expendable child bearers that were not very important in the community and were left to simply care for their families. rebirth and PuritanismReferring to class lecture and the Sommerville and Greven (i.e., cotton plant Mather) articlesdescribe the cultural context of the Renaissance and how it set the stage for the Puritan view of childhood and emphasis on educational reform.describe Puritan practices and goals associated with each of the following education, piety, and parenting. Discuss why the Puritans pushed for a more practical school curriculum and how Puritan values have influenced modern American culture.A) During the renaissance it seemed like parents became gentler towards their children and began to value them as more than just a way to continue their families. During this time parents began to shy away from so much physical punishment, as had been done in earlier times, because they believed that God was watching them. According to Sommervilles(1990) article, Childhood Becomes Crucial The Religious Reformations, reformers became more interested in children because of their concern for the future of the church and the childrens spiritual welfare. (p. 101) It seems like parents became aware that how they treated and taught their children would decide the future of their society. Children were taught more about what was right and wrong which began to set the stage for the wholesome childrearing tactic used by Puritans. Reformers made parents believe that their children co uld save the world. These reformations gave way to educational that were more rewarding for children instead of the before used tactics of fear and discipline. The structure of education changed into the system that would be used by the Puritans and one that modern education is foundationd off of.B) Piety According to Grevens(1973) article, Cotton Mather One the Education of his Children, children had to learn at early ages how to practice religion in order to be pious. (p. 43) Children were also encouraged to pray alone to develop their own tactics for prayer. Though adults believed that children had favor with God, they were taught at young ages of His watchful eye and how to stay in Gods favor. According to our lecture, puritans believed that everyone was entitled to a basic education regardless of class or economic status. (E. Miller, personal communication, February 27, 2014) Everyone was taught arithmetic, writing, and reading. Puritans also favored government assistance for s chools. These two characteristics are still the base of the modern education system. Class does not determine whether we are educated or not, it only determines the quality of education. Puritan parenting methods have resemblance to methods used in modern times. Today children are encouraged to rely largely on their parents for everything and usually do so without question, until a certain age at least. According to Greven(1973), children should fully rely on their parents to guide them and know that they have their best interests at heart. (p. 44) Puritans wanted to encourage children to trust their parents instead of fearing them as they may have in the past. I also think they wanted to dissuade children from rebelling against their parents as well. According to Sommervilles(1990) Childhood become of import the religious reformations, education became important because puritans believed that without a proper education their children would not be able to properly understand and te ach scriptures from the bible. Even girls would be included in this primary education, which was uncommon in earlier times. (p. 105) Puritans only believed in primary education for religious purposes which are similar to Americas views that education is for making money. Its interesting that in neither time periods is education considered important as a way to increase knowledge.ReferencesFrench, V. (1991). Children in antiquity. In J. M. Hawes N. R. Cuban Missile Crisis Essay -- essays research papers
A Geopolitical View on the Cuban Missile CrisisOver the course of the ordinal century, the join States has made some crucial decisions in regard to foreign policy. When the President of the United States looks to his advisors and policymakers to decide what course of action to take, he must depend all of the different variables. One of the most important variables that influence foreign policy decision making is the geopolitical view. A geopolitical variable takes into broadsheet a countrys geography and physical terrain and how that relates to certain foreign policymaking decisions. In the early 1960s, President Kennedys decision to institute a naval blockade around Cuba was conservatively made with full knowledge of the geopolitical variables. Throughout the Cuban Missile Crisis, the geopolitical variables greatly influenced President Kennedys decision to institute the naval blockade which lastly ended the Crisis. The Cold War was one of the most difficult times for foreign po licymakers in the United States. In September of 1962, the Soviet Union began deploying medium-range thermonuclear missiles to Cuba. The strategic plan of the Nikita Khrushchev was to have Soviet nuclear missile sites ninety miles off the coast of the United States to serve as military threat. When a United States U-2 spy plane brought back photographs of these missile sites in Cuba on October 15, 1962, U.S. military leaders acted immediately....

Asthma Essay -- Science Scientific Research Essays
Asthma Breathing is a vital process for every human. typical breathing is practically effortless for intimately people, but those with asthma face a great challenge. During an asthma attack, breathing is hampered, making it difficult or even impossible for air to flow by means of the lungs. Asthma is an increasingly common problem, and has become the most common chronic childhood disease. At least 17 million Americans suffer from it(1), and although it can be fatal, it is usually not that severe(4). There is no cure for asthma, but with proper care, it can usually be controlled. As someone with Exercise Induced Asthma, I have personal experience with the topic. I have experienced most of the symptoms described in my research, tried many of the medicines, and have my asthma under control. This render will first discuss the normal function of the lungs, and then proceed to explain how this is effected by asthma. The causes of the disease and the ways of controlling it will follow. Normal breathing is controlled by the lungs and the chest cavity. Airways are tubes with muscle that contracts and relaxes wrapped around them, and this accounts for the motion of the chest that is associated with breathing. The diaphragm, which is located underneath the rib cage, along with the intercostal muscles, or those in between the ribs, control the movement of the chest cavity(6). When these muscles contract, the chest expands, which lowers the pressure inside the lungs. Since air moves naturally from high to low pressure, the lungs are automatically inflated. In order to exhale, the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles relax, causing the chest cavity to become smaller. The decrease in volume causes the pressure in the lungs to go... ...pl/display.cfm?id=2=3214)Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Online,Taking Control http//allergy.mcg.edu/patients/control.htm5)Childrens medical checkup Center of UVA, How Attacks Happen http//www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/inter net/pediatrics/patients/tutorials/asthma/whydoes.htm6)Marshall Brains How Stuff Works Site, Lungs http//www.howstuffworks.com/lung1.htm7) Marshall Brains How Stuff Works Site , Lungs Continued http//www.howstuffworks.com/lung2.htm8)American Lung Association, fivesome Asthma Medication Groups http//www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=225429)National Jewish Medical and Research Center , Exercise Induced Asthma http//www.nationaljewish.org/error.aspx?type=40410) Childrens Medical Center of UVA , Treating Asthma http//www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/pediatrics/patients/tutorials/asthma/treat.htm
